Let's get the legal stuff out of the way first. This program is beta software and has had little testing. However, it hasn't crashed on my IIci or Centris 610 yet! Use this program AT YOUR OWN RISK! If you don't accept these terms, don't use it! :)
• What it does...
It let's you open any copy of Finder 7.1 and hack any of the STR# resources inside. These resources might contain menu text from the Finder or from other various dialogs etc..
• Doesn't ResEdit do that?
YES, but I had to give my first program something to do, right? If you don't have or like to use ResEdit, then this program is for you! If you're a software junkie who downloads everything new on AOL, then I guess this program is also for you! :)
• Isn't this program a little rough around the edges?
Yup, I am trying teach myself Pacal and Mac programming at the same time. Now for some, this is an easy task. For myself, it's been a long road. There's still a long way to go, and this is only my first endeavor at a program that actually does something. :) If you know how to fix one of the flaws in my little "program", by all means let me know! I need all the help I can get... However, this program does do exactly what I say it will (try that test on some commercial programs out there! he he).
How it works...
Just DUPLICATE your Finder and drag the copy out of the System Folder. Now launch SuperSTR# and select your copy. Just select a STR# from the STR# menu, and start hitting the UP arrow.
To edit a string...
Just select the text you want to replace, and type in the new string. The text edit box is sized to fit just about the maximum number of characters allowed per string. There's no scroll bar, so you shouldn't be able to go past the maximum number allowed. Once you have the text you want in the box, click "Save changes to this string" and you're done!
WARNING!
Anything that doesn't look like plain English, is probably a special character for the System to replace later with specific information! Stuff like "^0" means DON'T EDIT ME!
You can hack the words before and after these special characters, but I don't suggest you remove them.
To use your new Finder...
Drag the original Finder out of your System Folder and put it in a SAFE PLACE (ie: not the Trash), so if there's a problem, you can boot from a floppy and drag it back into the System Folder. Rename the "Finder copy" to "Finder" and drop it in the System Folder. Now just "Restart" and your changes should be in place.
Shareware?
No, this release isn't shareware. There is a registration option available, but I am not asking for a Shareware fee at this time. Maybe down the road, when I fix it up and add some features.
Known bugs...
The "Edit" menu won't pull down. I have no idea why! I have spent hours trying to fix this, to no avail. If you have a clue, drop me some mail.
There are other things to be fixed, but none of them cause crashes etc..
